What are Sexology and Sextherapy? History in brief.
Clinical sexology is the study of human sexuality in its both adequate and inadequate aspects. Sextherapy involves the assessments and treatments of sexual inadequacy using many tools. Sexology and Sextherapy became today a unique domain of specialization and are taught in many of the world’s best universities.
- Dr. Havelock Ellis (1859-1939), an English surgeon and sexologist published many articles regarding human sexuality and was the first to challenge the Victorian Age sexual repression.
- Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld founded the Zentrum fur Sexualwissenschaft, the first institute for Sexology in Berlin in 1919.
- Zentrum fur Sexualwissenschaft offered many services including research about human sexuality and articles publications, clinical consultations, and treatments of sexual problems.
- Zentrum fur Sexualwissenschaft came to an end on May 6, 1933 under the orders of the Nazi High Command. Books, articles, and patients files were all burned.
- 1948: Alfred Kinsey and Associates founded the Kinsey Institute for sexual research in the University of Indiana.
- 1967 – 1970: Dr. William Masters and Dr. Virginia Johnson published their famous books: Human sexual response and Human Sexual inadequacy.
- 1983: Humbolt-Universitat zu Berlin founded the Magnus Hirschfeld Archive for Sexology and made it open to the public.

How long have ‘Sexology’ and ‘Sextherapy’ been around?
These specializations are extremely rare in the Arab world and Lebanon. Many have never heard of sexology and sextherapy until recently even though they started in USA and Europe since the mid fifties. These specializations are regarded today as disciplines of their own, even though they cross out with medicine, humanities, law, anthropology, health and nutrition, psychology, physiology, anatomy and sociology.
